Meet Spinosaurus: The Ultimate River Monster!

Imagine the coolest dinosaur with a big sail on its back that loves water. That’s Spinosaurus, one of the most fascinating dinosaurs that ever roamed the Earth.
What Was Spinosaurus Like?
Spinosaurus was a giant dinosaur that lived about 100 million years ago during the Cretaceous period. It could grow up to 15 metres long—that’s longer than a school bus! Spinosaurus weighed up to 20 tonnes, which is about the same as three elephants.
The Big Sail
One of the coolest things about Spinosaurus is the large sail on its back. This sail was made of long spines covered with skin, and it could be up to 2 metres tall. Scientists think the sail helped Spinosaurus with several things, like keeping cool or attracting mates.
Life in the Water
Unlike most dinosaurs, Spinosaurus spent a lot of time in the water. It had a long, narrow snout filled with sharp teeth, perfect for catching fish. Spinosaurus also had flat, paddle-like feet to help it swim and a powerful tail for steering in the water. Think of it as a cross between a crocodile and a giant bird!
How Did Spinosaurus Hunt?
Spinosaurus was an excellent hunter. It probably spent a lot of time lurking in rivers and lakes, waiting for fish or other prey to come by. With its long arms and sharp claws, it could easily snatch its prey out of the water. But Spinosaurus didn’t just eat fish—it could also hunt smaller dinosaurs and other animals.
A Fossil Mystery
For a long time, scientists only had a few pieces of Spinosaurus fossils, making it a bit of a mystery. But over the years, they’ve found more bones and learned a lot about this amazing dinosaur. In fact, new discoveries are still being made, so who knows what we’ll find out next?
Fun Facts
